the content is for. Isn't it a little sad that effort of this magnitude
counts as a barrier?

Why block public access?
Not to take your data — that will never be the reason. Bots, scrapers and AI-training crawlers are: left open, a site like this gets strip-mined, so it sits behind the smallest door there is — an email address.
Signing in properly opens the full set of features. If you only want to look around, a reading link gets you 12 hours; the email you give is recorded, and nothing else is.
Notice there is no Create account. There's nothing to create — no password to invent, none stored here, none to leak. Your sign-in lives with Google or your inbox, who guard identities for a living, so the fuckery of a credential breach is offloaded to people equipped for it.
